I usually do not go through any software or special tools to find my keywords. I simply brainstorm a list of keywords that are related to the niche that I want to rank in. Here are some of the things that you can do to get started:

There are a lot of free tools that you can use to check the competition level. You can use the free Keyword Competitiveness Tool from SEO Book or the Google Adwords Keyword Planner.

Using the Google Keyword Planner is easy. All you have to do is type in your keyword and the tool will show you a bunch of other related keywords and their competition levels.

By default, it will also show you the search volume for each keyword, but you can also change that setting to show you the competition level only.

It also gives you a score (the higher the better) at how good or how hard it would be to rank for that keyword.
